Here are my raw, unedited notes from the Build conference keynote. I don’t make any claim they are 100% accurate, but just what I interpreted as I heard them.

Windows 8 Compatibility and Performance

  • Windows 8 would run Windows 7 applications, including on ARM processors
  • Significant performance improvements with lower resource requirements than Windows XP
  • Memory reduction: 540MB versus 281MB
  • Extremely fast boot times

User Interface and Features

  • Metro-style interface with full-screen, immersive, touch-enabled design
  • Picture password system for touch-based authentication
  • Home screen displaying email, appointments, and other data at a glance
  • Maintains Windows 7-style interface alongside Metro design
  • Search initiated by typing at start screen
  • Background images spanning multiple monitors

  • PC refresh option preserving Metro apps and user files
