Here are my raw, unedited notes from the Build conference keynote. I don’t make any claim they are 100% accurate, but just what I interpreted as I heard them.
Windows 8 Compatibility and Performance
- Windows 8 would run Windows 7 applications, including on ARM processors
- Significant performance improvements with lower resource requirements than Windows XP
- Memory reduction: 540MB versus 281MB
- Extremely fast boot times
User Interface and Features
- Metro-style interface with full-screen, immersive, touch-enabled design
- Picture password system for touch-based authentication
- Home screen displaying email, appointments, and other data at a glance
- Maintains Windows 7-style interface alongside Metro design
- Search initiated by typing at start screen
- Background images spanning multiple monitors
Development Capabilities
- Apps written in HTML5/JavaScript with native controls accessible from JavaScript
- XAML/Silverlight support for converting existing applications into Metro apps
- Expression Blend 5 for editing HTML5 Windows 8 applications

- Certification process tracking in App Hub
- Compliance tools for developers
- Support for Win32 applications (like Quicken)
- Positioned as less controlling than competing app stores

- Pin-based security options
- Improved Task Manager showing CPU, memory, and disk usage
- PC refresh option preserving Metro apps and user files
- Remote desktop with touch interface support
- Hyper-V included in Windows client
- File Explorer parent directory navigation button
Hardware and Connectivity
- Tap-to-share technology using NFC/RFID antennas
- Advanced WiFi/3G roaming capabilities
- Resolution support: 1024px width minimum for Metro apps, 1366px enabling side-by-side windows
